The Nexus One is out and it’s faster than the iPhone and the Droid, but speed isn’t everything and the iPhone has beat all competitors in one of the most important areas – touchscreen accuracy.

A test carried out by labs.MOTO.com pitted the iPhone, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, and Google Nexus One against each other in a simple touchscreen test. MOTO used a line drawing application that would clearly show which smartphone has the most accurate capacitive touchscreen.

The straighter the lines created when a finger is passed over the touchscreen the more accurate it is. As you can see from the image above the lines on the iPhone are much straighter than all the other smartphones and MOTO concludes it has the best touchscreen. They also note that:

It takes finesse to create a touchscreen system that’s pleasant to use, because touchscreens require seamless integration between hardware components, software algorithms, and user-interface design. If a manufacturer cuts corners or flubs any of the critical elements, the user’s experience with a touchscreen product is likely to suffer.

MOTO also conclude that the amount of pressure used has an effect and a lighter touch produces more artifacts. Accuracy at the edge of a touchscreen is also a factor and something MOTO admit is hard to tune, but the Nexus One seems to have the best performance in that regard.
