Each week, Androinica.com recaps new and updated Android apps that you may have missed or might enjoy. The apps are picked according to developer requests, user suggestions, and browsing the Android Market. To submit an app for review, send us a note on Twitter. Ring Dimmer Android 1.6 or higher $0.99 USD Ever set your ringer to low because you were at work, and then missed a call later because you forgot to raise the volume once you left the office? If you answer ‘yes’ to that question, you might want to try out Ring Dimmer. By listening to your surroundings, Ring Dimmer knows what kind of volume to apply to the ringer. So if there’s just a little bit of light talking, the ringer will be low or normal. But if the phone picks up on car honking or music blasting, the ringer will be set to its maximum volume. There’s also a “Smart Vibrate” feature that adjusts vibration based on time of day and noise. Ring Dimmer is a niche product, but it’s worth a buck if you don’t want to constantly have to monitor your ringer settings. Saving Yello Saving Yello is sort of like Angry Birds. Really, sort of. Players pull back on a fish and launch him through obstacles in order to land in a fish bowl. Players earn extra points for sending Nemo’s buddy safely into his home without hitting the roof and doing so in as few attempts as possible. Some levels feature toys that the fish can destroy to earn more points. The game should be easily adaptable for anyone who enjoys physics-based games, and integration with OpenFeint sets-up competition to see who can rack up the most points and stars. The first 10 levels are free, but users will have to unlock the rest of the game for $1. Tongue Tied Android 2.2+ required $1.99 USD And while we’re on the subject of physics games, I think it’s safe to say that Tongue Tied is the best game in the genre that we’ve seen in a long time. Two dogs have their tongues tied together, which allows them to shoot forward to pick up bones, swing to different platforms, and reach spots that would otherwise be unavailable to a solo dog. Players of the game must figure out how to make the doggy duo swing to get treats and move safely through a range of obstacles. You’ll pick-up on some interesting moves along the way and quickly become entertained by the format of Tongue Tied. The game has 60 levels and 33 challenges to unlock more content. When you get really good at the game, you can push your top score higher by employing more difficult tricks. I haven’t approached that level of mastery yet, but the game has already proven to be quite fun. Likes Android 2.1+ required As Facebook braces for negativity as it undergoes some major changes, a new third-party app focuses on the positive. Likes is an explorer of your area that lists all of the nearby locations and things that your Facebook friends have liked. The app showcases all of the activities, products, places, and people favored by your social graph. Landmarks, theaters, night clubs, restaurants, and retailers are among the many “Places” categories available. You can then filter those likes according to locations within 0.3, 1, 5, or 25 miles. Unfortunately, Likes often fails to recognize locations. Three of my friends Like Sole Fly, a great sneaker store nearby, but Likes doesn’t show an address. Worse yet, dozens of the 2,000+ likes in that section seem to be nonsensical status updates and groups. The app isn’t a lost cause though, because the “More Likes” section shows books, magazines, music, sports, and products that your friends like. It can be a good way to find people to ask for advice or share activities, get insight into gift ideas, or just see what’s popular among your network. Likes allows users to filter within their network (city, college, etc.) or just Friends, and perform search terms. Cartoon Wars Android 2.2+ required Long ago, the Black and White Cartoon Tribe was subjugated by the Color Tribe. The BWCT’s revolted and waged war on the CT’s to win freedom for all in Cartoon World. The premise is a little heavier for what you’d expect from a game with fighting stick figures, but Cartoon Wars is a fun way to kill a few minutes here and there. The game focuses on real-time strategy battles between the two waring tribes. Players send units out to destroy the Color Tribe’s towers, fire arrows to protect their own, and send in reinforcements when the opposition proves too strong. Sending in more units requires “mana” (points) that players accumulate during gameplay, and the opposition must be destroyed in a certain amount of time. Cartoon Wars features weapons and infantry upgrades for better attacks and defenses.
Sunday will be the first time that many Americans are introduced to the Samsung Galaxy Note, thanks to the supersized Super Bowl commercial to go along with the device’s supersized 5.3-inch SuperAMOLED screen. Super. This Sunday will also be the day that the Galaxy Note goes up for pre-order for AT&T. Best Buy Mobile will begin reserving phones for consumers interested in the Galaxy Note, which retails for $299.99 on a two-year agreement, and it’s throwing in a special offer for those who purchase from the store. Anyone who pre-orders with Best Buy and activates the phone in-store or at BestBuy.com/Mobile will receive a free Protective Flip Cover Case. During my time at CES, a surprising number of the Asian journalist and bloggers in attendance were using the Galaxy Note, and virtually all of them had the flip cover case as well. It’s a thin case that clips on to replace the back cover and protects the front with a faux-leather-like material. The case is valued at $29.99, but Best Buy is selling it for free. Droid-Den has a review of the case if you’d like to know more about the product and see if this sways you to pre-order with Best Buy or another retailer. For more information on the Galaxy Note, you know where to look . img credit: photobucket

Why is RIM giving Android devs free Playbooks? Look at the latest comscore results.

To our readers who happen to be Android developers, I hope you know that RIM wants to give you a free BlackBerry Playbook. VP of Developer Relations Alec Saunders has said that Android developers who repackage their apps and submit it to BB AppWorld will get a free Playbook. Sounds like a great deal, but with several hundred thousand apps in the Android Market, a huge number of developers might take RIM up on that offer. Clearly RIM has to do something to attract attention away from Android and iOS, but especially Android. Much of Android’s growth over the past two years has come at the expense of RIM’s BlackBerry OS. The former leading smartphone operating system has fallen consistently while Android has risen to take the top spot and iOS has held relatively steady. RIM and its recently appointed new CEO need to do something to reverse BlackBerry’s fortunes. Take a look at the comScore data that was released yesterday. In the three-month average ending December 2011, Android grew to a 47.3 percent share of smartphone subscribers. That’s up from the 44.8 percent in September. Comparatively, Apple went up from 27.4 to 29.6 percent, and RIM went down from 18.9 to 16.0 percent. The smartphone war continues to be a battle between Google and Apple, with RIM and Microsoft left to fend for scraps. Microsoft has made its aggressive push with Nokia, and RIM has yet to find a plan to attract customers. So now we return to the tablets-for-apps trade-off. RIM probably believes that attracting a higher number of Android developers will increase the quality of its BlackBerry AppWorld. These developers helped improve Android’s overall quality, so maybe they can work some of that magic for BlackBerry, too? Even if this doesn’t attract new users, at least having better apps might stop the bleeding and encourage current fans to stick around longer until a new crop of devices emerge at the end of the year. It’s probably a cheap solution when you consider that there’s a probably huge inventory of unsold Playbooks sitting in a warehouse in Waterloo. Android still holds the dominant position in comScore’s MobiLens report, a survey of 30,000 smartphone subscribers in the United States. That was thanks in part to the combined popularity of Samsung, LG, and Motorola, who ranked as the top three phone producers (when including non-smartphones as well).

Pretty much every time we hear the terms ‘’business’’ or ‘’enterprise’’ used next to a tablet, we know we should expect a robust and expensive slate running Windows. However, the folks at Fujitsu just announced the release of a tablet that, while pretty robust and sturdy, doesn’t run Windows and isn’t that expensive either. The Stylistic M350/CA2 is set to hit Japan later this month for around ¥34,800(455 US dollars) and might come to International markets, including the United States, if it will prove successful in ‘’the land of rising sun’’. However, if you ask me, this 7-incher does not look great on paper, at least in terms of tech specs and hardware. Set to be powered by a pretty decent 1 GHz Freescale i.MX processor, the Stylistic M350/CA2 only features 512 MB of DDR3 RAM, as well as 8 GB of internal storage space. The 7-inch screen sported comes with a 1024 x 600 pixels resolution, which is pretty much all you could expect from a tablet this small. Other features include a mini HDMI port, a microSD card slot for memory expansion, Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi b/g/n connectivity, which are all pretty basic things for Android tablets these days, while the OS of choice is Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sure, I wasn’t expecting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or a quad-core processor under the hood, but then again if you are going to call a tablet ‘’business-oriented’’, you could at least come with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of on-board memory. As far as the design goes, the Stylistic slate looks pretty elegant and is set to weigh only 420 grams (14.8 ounces), while in terms of battery life, the folks at Fujitsu are promising an estimated autonomy of around six hours based on medium use. As I already mentioned, the 7-incher should go for sale in the next couple of weeks in Japan, but if you ask me, the slate needs a serious price cut before being released in other markets as well.
With this year’s Super Bowl just around the corner (57 hours and counting, boys and girls!), the good guys at EA Sports have prepared a very nice surprise for all us Android geeks with a passion for football as well. The best-selling title Madden NFL 12’s price has been slashed to just 99 cents for a limited time only, which I personally find very annoying, as I bought the game a long, long time ago. Those of you who haven’t bought it yet have the perfect excuse to do so, as for just 0.99 dollars you don’t get many premium titles these days. The game offers authentic NFL action, allowing users to choose from the 32 real teams and battle it out in their true-to-life stadiums. You can play this game as a fan, a professional football player or a manager and you can control every move in the game, you can make trades, track stats, design your own strategies or play by the already existing NFL strategies. I could go on and on talking about this game’s cool features, including the graphics, which is pretty amazing, but the fact of the matter is that if you are a football fan, you have no excuse in not running Madden NFL 12 on your Android slate or smartphone right now. Hurry up if you want to grab the NFL 12 game for just 99 cents, as something tells me that this offer might well expire by the end of the day! Hit the source link below for the Android Market download link and tell us all about your gaming experience in the comment section. Also, I’m interested in your views on this year’s Super Bowl, as I can’t seem to decide whether to root for the mighty New York Giants or for the spectacular New England Patriots.
Ever since the HP TouchPad was sold for 100 bucks at special offer a while back, we have all dreamed to put our hands on a similar tablet for such a low price. Unfortunately, while there are a bunch of slates available for $100 or even less, in most cases these offer very low performance, horrible designs and/or a complete and utter lack of features. The IdolPad 7-incher was pretty quietly released a few weeks ago and, even though it didn’t draw our attention at that time, the latest official announcement about it made us intrigued. According to a press release from Idolian, the tablet’s manufacturer, the IdolPad will upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future. The upgrade is set to take place ‘’by the end of May 2012’’, but an exact roll-out date is yet to be announced. Once it will run ICS, though, the slate might become a device to watch, as it is powered by a decent enough 1 GHz Cortex A9 processor and features 512 MB of RAM. Of course, you shouldn’t expect this to be an iPad killer or even a worthy competitor for the Kindle Fire in many aspects, but for just 100 bucks you should get a gadget that is surprisingly not awful. The 7-inch screen sported by the IdolPad features a 800 x 480 pixels resolution, while in terms of design the slate is not exactly a looker, but is decently light and thin (it weighs 11.2 ounces and measures 0.5 inches in depth). Other features include only 4 GB of internal storage space, a HDMI port (kudos for that!), a microUSB port, WiFi 802.11 b/g connectivity, as well as G-Sensor technology and accelerometer. There’s also a microSDHC card slot for expanding the storage, as well as a battery that should go for between four and six hours on a single charge, according to the producers’ claims (I highly doubt that). All in all, while I’m still far from sold by the idea of buying such a low-price gadget right now, I’m dying to see how Ice Cream Sandwich will look on the IdolPad once the update will be live. What do you think, would you consider getting a 100-dollar 7-inch tablet like this if it can decently run Android 4.0? Hit us with a comment and let us know. Via Prweb.com

Hey now! It looks like Google, or the mystery magical app fairies, managed to get Google Wallet into the Android Market for more Nexus devices. Previously, Google Wallet was viewable in the Android Market only by Sprint Nexus S 4G users, but it’s suddenly popped up for Galaxy Nexus users on AT&T and Nexus S owners on T-Mobile USA. There’s no telling when it first started happening, but The Verge reports that it’s available now. A few people in the comment section report that they are now able to see the app and download it, a welcome change from the previous solution of hunting down APK’s and having to repeat the process when an update was available. This method is officially sanctioned and allows users to get to Google Wallet via the standard installation method. Also of note is that some Verizon Galaxy Nexus 4G users are also able to download directly through the Android Market via a workaround. Droid-Life received a tip from a reader who found a roundabout way to install through the browser on the Galaxy Nexus. I managed to get it to work on my stock, non-rooted Galaxy Nexus on my third attempt (use the long way described); others weren’t so lucky. In an ideal world, Google would just make the app available to everyone, but carriers sadly stand in the way of that happening. You can look around for an APK to install manually if you own an unsupported device, but those lucky enough to get Wallet through the Market can get a list of local stores that support it here .

Maybe mobile anti-virus companies are charlatans after all. Google’s Chris DiBona infamously applied that label to companies selling mobile anti-virus software through fear-mongering, and Symantec made a huge mistake recently that doesn’t help dispel DiBona’s characterization of the industry. On Friday afternoon, Symantec sounded the alarm and said an outbreak of malware known as Android.Counterclank may have infected up to 5 million users. A number of “malicious” apps with sneaky permissions had made their way into the Android Market and were putting devices at risk. Rival security company Lookout then jumped in and told Symantec that it was wrong. The alleged malware was really just adware – apps that installed unwanted browser and homescreen shortcuts without the user’s express permission. That’s a douchey way of spamming users, and grounds for immediate removal if I see it on my device, but it’s a very different view of the situation than the one painted by Symantec. There was no malware, which the company eventually admitted . And that’s the problem with these “mass outbreaks of malware” reports from security companies that keep popping up. Almost always there’s an accusation, a question of how accurate that is, and then the company backtracking from its original statement with egg on its face. Symantec was not the first such company , and it probably won’t be the last. As long as smartphone usage keeps growing rapidly and there’s money to be made off playing to user fears, mobile anti-virus companies will continue to cry wolf. We try to downplay the scares and use them as an opportunity to remind users to check their permissions when installing apps, but perhaps we’re part of the problem my mentioning them at all. Maybe we should do a better job of explicitly pointing out when companies seem to be full of crap. Maybe mobile security companies should change their whole approach. Symantec was right to call attention to apps aggressively spamming users; however, it made a critical error in labeling them as “malware” instead of the more accurate “adware” label. Had I known that Symantec could warn me about an app that changes my browser’s homepage, adds and removes bookmarks, or installs shortcuts to websites on my homepage, I’d find that to be rather useful. If ads start showing up in my notification bar and I can’t figure out which app is responsible or how to disable it , it would be good to have an app that could point it out. Why take the leap into labeling it an anti-virus scan when that mischaracterizes the issue and brings up an old way of thinking on desktops? The issue is even more muddled now that Google has revealed “Bouncer,” a service that already automatically scans apps for malware or intrusive code. Why would anyone need Kasperksy, Lookout, Norton, or any other security app for that purpose if Google is already scanning Market apps? If mobile security companies want to stay relevant, they should focus less on the mobile malware scare tactics and more on alerting users about the questionable practices of some app developers and mobile websites. Or, do play up their services like lost phone location, call blocking, and features besides hunting down a malware ghost that is haunting anyone.

In light of the many reports of alleged malware scares on Android, users might get the misconception that Google doesn’t care about Android security. The fact that so few of those scare ever involve the Android Market proves that’s clearly not the case. Google cares very much about security, and it’s taken a step to make the Android Market even safer with a service known as “Bouncer.” Android VP of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer announced today that Google scans all new apps uploaded to the Android Market. Immediately following upload, the service analyzes apps for spyware or trojans, then simulates how the app will run on an Android device. A scan might reveal potential red flags on an app or the developer account of repeat offenders, allowing Google to know what and who to kick out. In effect, Bouncer keeps the riff raff out of Club Android. The service has actually been around for a while now and lead to a 40 percent decrease in the number of “potentially-malicious downloads” says Lockheimer. This flies in the face of companies alleging that malware is increasing , but there’s an important distinction to be made: “While it’s not possible to prevent bad people from building malware, the most important measurement is whether those bad applications are being installed from Android Market – and we know the rate is declining significantly.” – Hiroshi Lockenheimer . Head to the Google Mobile Blog to learn more about Bouncer and how Android, by design, is less susceptible to malware than the PC model. Malware will still be around, but Google contends that the Android Market will not be a distribution point for it thanks to the added layer of security.

Rhapsody streams your favorite music to your Android phone, Google TV, and even your Sonos player. Today, the company added Android tablets to the list thanks to a new tablet view designed specifically with 7 to 10-inch screens in mind. “We didn’t just resize Rhapsody – we re-imagined the entire experience for the tablet,” said Rhapsody CPO Brendan Benzing. The new Rhapsody tablet mode is a prime example of the cool things developers can do with a tablet. As expected, users can stream songs and build playlists or queues, but the larger screen allows them to do it without constantly pressing the back button. It’s also much easier to browse through a library because Rhapsody greets users with a screen showcasing featured content in three sections: New Releases; Popular artists, albums, and songs; and Suggestions for artists to listen to based on the music users have already added to their library. Rhapsody also has an action bar for the Browse, Features, My Music, Radio (stations built around an artist or genre), search, and control sections. A right panel shows the album cover art, playlist, and controls to play or skip back/forward. A homescreen widget is also included, but it could stand to larger than the 4

In the market for a new tablet but don’t want to break the bank purchasing one? Sprint’s got you covered. The Now Network today officially announced the ZTE Optik, a low-cost Android Honeycomb tablet with decent specs and an even better price. The ZTE Optik costs only $99 when purchased with a two-year agreement for one of Sprint’s Tablet Connection plans. But users can also opt to purchase the tablet at full price for $349.99 and not be tied down to a contract. For the price, you’ll get a tablet with a respectable resume. The ZTE Optik runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb, but there’s no mention or promise to upgrade the device to Android 4.0 in the future. It has a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of internal storage. The Optik features a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen with WXGA (1280

The Android Platform Version chart has just been updated with the December figures and, while there aren’t any important surprises, there are a couple of interesting changes. Gingerbread remains the number one Android platform and has increased its lead from second place considerably. The 2.3 version powers no less than 58.6 percent of all Android-operated devices right now, while the runner up, 2.2 Froyo, only runs on 27.8 percent of Google powered gadgets. Those two were in the lead a month ago as well, but the difference between them has increased from just over 25 percent to a whopping 30.8 percent. The second runner-up is Android 2.1 Eclair, with a 7.6% market share, down 0.9 percent from last month. Honeycomb is in fourth place, as it was 30 days ago, down 0.1 percent to a 3.4% market share. Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest (and greatest, if I may say so) Android version is unsurprisingly only fifth in this share ranking. Unsurprisingly, because after all there are only a couple of available smartphones running 4.0 ICS and one slate. On the other hand, the next Google developers report (or maybe the one after that) should see an important change in rankings, as more and more smartphones and slates running Ice Cream Sandwich are due to be officially launched this late winter and in early spring. For the time being, we should mention that Ice Cream Sandwich has gone up from 0.6% a month ago to a whole percent right now, managing to tie the 1.6 Donut and surpass the 1.5 Cupcake. These two have still got teeny-weeny market shares, even though I personally don’t know anyone with a gadget running either of the two Android versions, but soon enough both Donut and Cupcake are set to become extinct. Check out the full chart below or hit the source link for more details.

Samsung disappointed some and pleased others when it said that the successor to its Galaxy S II device would not be unveiled at Mobile World Congress later this month. But what’s this? A mystery device showing a Samsung phone that looks to have a customized version of Android 4.0. Could this be the Galaxy S III? Or maybe the Galaxy S 2 Plus? Probably neither. Before you get too excited, this is just a Photoshop job – and a poor one at that – supposedly of a press photo leaked. It was posted a short while ago by Eldar Murtazin, a mobile phone blogger and insider who is sometimes very right and other times very wrong. It was attached to a tweet that simply said “Barcelona. Samsung. Press photo leaked” and a round of coy smiles when asked if this is the GS III or GS II Plus. I doubt this is a press photo at all because of the poor quality of the graphic. Looking at the bottom and left sides of the image, you can see what’s clearly a hack job of trying to resize, merge, and align different images pieced together in Photoshop. There’s also a terrible job of blending and the widgets don’t look right, which leads me to believe that this isn’t a “press photo.” Samsung would never have something this crappy sent to the press. It’s more than likely just an image someone crafted regarding how they think the next Samsung phone will look. It would be nice if elements of this concept really do appear in a Samsung device. The nice rectangular shape, large screen, Android 4.0, and slim build are all excellent qualities. We’ll know soon enough. Maybe. [ Twitter ]

Radio Shack is known for throwing customers a bargain here and there, but the company is making that a daily fixture at its retail stores. Today, Radio Shack announced its Mobile Low Price Guarantee for Wireless Phones that promises that The Shack will match any price advertised by a local retailer. The Mobile Low Price Guarantee states that customers can bring in a print ad from a newspaper or circular showing the price of a competitor – like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. – selling a similar on-contract or no-contract phone. A Shack employee will then validate the offer and match the price at checkout. Furthermore, customers can bring in an advertisement up to 30 days after purchase and get a price difference. So if you buy a phone at The Shack for $179 on February 1 and see a Best Buy ad for $159 on March 2, you can still get $20 back. The new deal begins officially today, so anyone eyeing a phone from AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon can swing by their local Radio Shack and make a purchase knowing that they will get the best possible deal from a local retailer. Keep in mind that restrictions apply, namely that competitors must sell the same phone with the same agreements as the one purchased at Radio Shack. Pricing errors at a competitor may not be honored, and the guarantee excludes deals offered online or in non-newspaper advertisements. Read the full stipulations here , and check with your local Radio Shack to make sure it is participating in this deal before purchase (some may be franchises that opt-out of honoring the guarantee.)

At CES 2012, Verizon Wireless announced several smartphones including the LG Spectrum, DROID RAZR MAXX, DROID RAZR in purple, and the Motorola DROID 4 . The first three smartphones already launched in January, so the only 4G LTE smartphone to launch at this point is the DROID 4. The Motorola DROID 4 is essentially a RAZR packed with a revamped Slider QWERTY keyboard, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and Android 2.3 onboard. Given the fact that it is a new device, it should be upgraded to Android 4.0 in the near future. In terms of when it is going to be released, Droid-Life is citing some of their own sources that it will be released on February 9th for $199. Verizon is moving towards the trend of pricing their high-end 4G LTE devices with only 16GB of on board storage at $199, such as the Motorola DROID RAZR. However, the high-end devices with larger storage capacities will continue to be priced at $299. If Verizon does indeed launch the DROID 4 on February 9th, I imagine we will have an official announcement confirming this information within the next several days. [ Droid-Life ]
