Google believes near field communication (NFC) is the future of mobile, but the present is very limited since only Android 2.3 supports it and the Samsung Nexus S is the only device that can read NFC information. For the select group of people who access to NFC, a couple Android apps have emerged to take advantage of the feature. EnableTable is a digital coupon scanner and rewards punch card. The program rewards repeat customers and there are no “elaborate games or check-ins to waste your time” either. After the meal is complete and the bill arrives, place your Nexus S on top and a coupon will be redeemed and replaced with another coupon. The program is available only at participating restaurants. Taglet is a Japanese app that reads NFC tags and acts on them. A user can scan a tag on a paper or sticker and then the phone will automatically go to a URL or load contact information. It can even be placed on top of another phone and have that person’s phone number appear instantly on your Nexus S, making the number exchange ritual more simple than it’s ever been. The Carphone Warehouse has dramatically slashed the price of the Google Nexus S by £120 – down by almost 22 per cent to £429.99 for a SIM-free handset.

Google just announced that the Nexus S is now available at Best Buy and Best Boy mobile stores for $529.99 unlocked (which means it will work on AT&T’s network without 3G (for now)) or $199.99 with a T-Mobile 2 year plan.

The Nexus S has been out for a day now and folks likely can’t put the thing down. We all know of the big features in Android 2.3 and the device itself, but there are still new bits and pieces sprinkled throughout that could easily go unnoticed. One such feature is a Macro focus mode for the phone’s camera. It’s not a huge revelation by any means, but every little bit adds up to making for a great experience. It got me thinking though: have any of you found anything you didn’t expect to find in Android 2.3? I haven’t gotten a chance to play with the device for myself, so I’m at the mercy of reviewers and fine folks like you conversing.

Those in the UK can now opt-in for a Nexus S thanks to retailer Carphone Warehouse letting the floodgates open for preorder. £549.99 will get you the device SIM-Free for use on any carrier (and it’s likely what the PAYG carriers will be offering it for), but if you don’t mind committing to a two year contract you can get it for free at £35 per month with any carrier. £20 tariffs are available, but be expected to pay close to £250 for the device upfront.

Google has confirmed that the Nexus S, unlike Samsung’s other Android smartphones, won’t require the Korean company’s Kies desktop management app for installing software updates. Instead, Android Developer Advocate Reto Meier confirmed, updates will be released over-the-air as with the Nexus One.
The news will come as a relief to those non-Windows users eyeing the Nexus S, as currently Samsung only offers a version of Kies for PCs and not Mac or Linux.

The Nexus S is official today and we couldn’t be more excited. We’ll be back in a flash with more coverage, but we wanted to drop the press release as soon as possible. All the stuff we have come to expect is in the phone, including Android 2.3 and the curved glass screen. Looks like we’ll be getting ourselves a new Android phone in time for Christmas as this goes on sale “after December 16th” at Best Buy (US) and Carphone Warehouse (UK) locations after December 20th.

For the last few days I’ve been using the Google Nexus S, manufactured by Samsung, with the new Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” operating system. This is a phone that was designed with direct input from the Google Android team. And like its predecessor, the Nexus One, which was released in January 2010, it has a “clean” install of Android. That means there is no additional software layer from third party OEMs or carriers to interfere with the user experience. Like the Nexus One, this will become the reference phone for this generation of Android.

The Nexus S is teasing us again, this time with some video. It’s full 720p, and is fairly good quality considering the lighting conditions of the scene. The video has obviously been compressed, and the bright light at the top blows out the detail, but the colors are sharp and the low light areas of the video hold quality well. There are a couple dropped frames, but nothing too bad. The sound quality on the recording is fairly good as well. There isn’t a lot of ambient noise to mess with the microphones, but the sound is warm. There is still no firm date on the Nexus S, but the likelihood is that it will come in tandem or very close to the Gingerbread announcement. Earlier today, we saw what looks like a leak from Notion Ink, outing the Gingerbread release for Monday December 6th. Here’s the video for as long as it lasts. The hotly anticipated Nexus S – a device we’ve seen plenty of even though it hasn’t been announced yet, has reappeared at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The handset, also known as the Samsung GT-i9020T, is identical to the phone previously submitted to the FCC, except for brand new GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi antennas. Is Samsung trying to avoid the GPS fiasco of the Galaxy S with these antenna changes?
