Samsung Mobile promised that it would go big with its first ever Super Bowl campaign, and boy did they. In a 90-second commercial that played in the fourth quarter of the game, Samsung introduced the AT&T Galaxy Note to the millions watching the Super Bowl. Directed by the Farrely Brothers of There’s Something About Mary fame, the Galaxy Note ad continued Samsung’s trend of “The Next Big Thing is Already Here” ad series. Only, it took a bit of twist to make the message a bit more in-your-face about not waiting for a new phone. And it still found a way to dig at the infamous barista. A Super Bowl commercial isn’t cheap – it costs $3.5 million per 30 seconds according to some estimates – so Samsung opened up the checkbook on its campaign. The Galaxy Note already has a screen large enough to stand out in stores, but this ad may be an expensive nudge to get consumers buying. The Note is available for pre-order now from AT&T or Best Buy. Here’s a look at what $10 million gets you. What did you think? Let us know in the poll below. Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Each week, Androinica.com recaps new and updated Android apps that you may have missed or might enjoy. The apps are picked according to developer requests, user suggestions, and browsing the Android Market. To submit an app for review, send us a note on Twitter. Ring Dimmer Android 1.6 or higher $0.99 USD Ever set your ringer to low because you were at work, and then missed a call later because you forgot to raise the volume once you left the office? If you answer ‘yes’ to that question, you might want to try out Ring Dimmer. By listening to your surroundings, Ring Dimmer knows what kind of volume to apply to the ringer. So if there’s just a little bit of light talking, the ringer will be low or normal. But if the phone picks up on car honking or music blasting, the ringer will be set to its maximum volume. There’s also a “Smart Vibrate” feature that adjusts vibration based on time of day and noise. Ring Dimmer is a niche product, but it’s worth a buck if you don’t want to constantly have to monitor your ringer settings. Saving Yello Saving Yello is sort of like Angry Birds. Really, sort of. Players pull back on a fish and launch him through obstacles in order to land in a fish bowl. Players earn extra points for sending Nemo’s buddy safely into his home without hitting the roof and doing so in as few attempts as possible. Some levels feature toys that the fish can destroy to earn more points. The game should be easily adaptable for anyone who enjoys physics-based games, and integration with OpenFeint sets-up competition to see who can rack up the most points and stars. The first 10 levels are free, but users will have to unlock the rest of the game for $1. Tongue Tied Android 2.2+ required $1.99 USD And while we’re on the subject of physics games, I think it’s safe to say that Tongue Tied is the best game in the genre that we’ve seen in a long time. Two dogs have their tongues tied together, which allows them to shoot forward to pick up bones, swing to different platforms, and reach spots that would otherwise be unavailable to a solo dog. Players of the game must figure out how to make the doggy duo swing to get treats and move safely through a range of obstacles. You’ll pick-up on some interesting moves along the way and quickly become entertained by the format of Tongue Tied. The game has 60 levels and 33 challenges to unlock more content. When you get really good at the game, you can push your top score higher by employing more difficult tricks. I haven’t approached that level of mastery yet, but the game has already proven to be quite fun. Likes Android 2.1+ required As Facebook braces for negativity as it undergoes some major changes, a new third-party app focuses on the positive. Likes is an explorer of your area that lists all of the nearby locations and things that your Facebook friends have liked. The app showcases all of the activities, products, places, and people favored by your social graph. Landmarks, theaters, night clubs, restaurants, and retailers are among the many “Places” categories available. You can then filter those likes according to locations within 0.3, 1, 5, or 25 miles. Unfortunately, Likes often fails to recognize locations. Three of my friends Like Sole Fly, a great sneaker store nearby, but Likes doesn’t show an address. Worse yet, dozens of the 2,000+ likes in that section seem to be nonsensical status updates and groups. The app isn’t a lost cause though, because the “More Likes” section shows books, magazines, music, sports, and products that your friends like. It can be a good way to find people to ask for advice or share activities, get insight into gift ideas, or just see what’s popular among your network. Likes allows users to filter within their network (city, college, etc.) or just Friends, and perform search terms. Cartoon Wars Android 2.2+ required Long ago, the Black and White Cartoon Tribe was subjugated by the Color Tribe. The BWCT’s revolted and waged war on the CT’s to win freedom for all in Cartoon World. The premise is a little heavier for what you’d expect from a game with fighting stick figures, but Cartoon Wars is a fun way to kill a few minutes here and there. The game focuses on real-time strategy battles between the two waring tribes. Players send units out to destroy the Color Tribe’s towers, fire arrows to protect their own, and send in reinforcements when the opposition proves too strong. Sending in more units requires “mana” (points) that players accumulate during gameplay, and the opposition must be destroyed in a certain amount of time. Cartoon Wars features weapons and infantry upgrades for better attacks and defenses.
Sunday will be the first time that many Americans are introduced to the Samsung Galaxy Note, thanks to the supersized Super Bowl commercial to go along with the device’s supersized 5.3-inch SuperAMOLED screen. Super. This Sunday will also be the day that the Galaxy Note goes up for pre-order for AT&T. Best Buy Mobile will begin reserving phones for consumers interested in the Galaxy Note, which retails for $299.99 on a two-year agreement, and it’s throwing in a special offer for those who purchase from the store. Anyone who pre-orders with Best Buy and activates the phone in-store or at BestBuy.com/Mobile will receive a free Protective Flip Cover Case. During my time at CES, a surprising number of the Asian journalist and bloggers in attendance were using the Galaxy Note, and virtually all of them had the flip cover case as well. It’s a thin case that clips on to replace the back cover and protects the front with a faux-leather-like material. The case is valued at $29.99, but Best Buy is selling it for free. Droid-Den has a review of the case if you’d like to know more about the product and see if this sways you to pre-order with Best Buy or another retailer. For more information on the Galaxy Note, you know where to look . img credit: photobucket

To our readers who happen to be Android developers, I hope you know that RIM wants to give you a free BlackBerry Playbook. VP of Developer Relations Alec Saunders has said that Android developers who repackage their apps and submit it to BB AppWorld will get a free Playbook. Sounds like a great deal, but with several hundred thousand apps in the Android Market, a huge number of developers might take RIM up on that offer. Clearly RIM has to do something to attract attention away from Android and iOS, but especially Android. Much of Android’s growth over the past two years has come at the expense of RIM’s BlackBerry OS. The former leading smartphone operating system has fallen consistently while Android has risen to take the top spot and iOS has held relatively steady. RIM and its recently appointed new CEO need to do something to reverse BlackBerry’s fortunes. Take a look at the comScore data that was released yesterday. In the three-month average ending December 2011, Android grew to a 47.3 percent share of smartphone subscribers. That’s up from the 44.8 percent in September. Comparatively, Apple went up from 27.4 to 29.6 percent, and RIM went down from 18.9 to 16.0 percent. The smartphone war continues to be a battle between Google and Apple, with RIM and Microsoft left to fend for scraps. Microsoft has made its aggressive push with Nokia, and RIM has yet to find a plan to attract customers. So now we return to the tablets-for-apps trade-off. RIM probably believes that attracting a higher number of Android developers will increase the quality of its BlackBerry AppWorld. These developers helped improve Android’s overall quality, so maybe they can work some of that magic for BlackBerry, too? Even if this doesn’t attract new users, at least having better apps might stop the bleeding and encourage current fans to stick around longer until a new crop of devices emerge at the end of the year. It’s probably a cheap solution when you consider that there’s a probably huge inventory of unsold Playbooks sitting in a warehouse in Waterloo. Android still holds the dominant position in comScore’s MobiLens report, a survey of 30,000 smartphone subscribers in the United States. That was thanks in part to the combined popularity of Samsung, LG, and Motorola, who ranked as the top three phone producers (when including non-smartphones as well).

Pretty much every time we hear the terms ‘’business’’ or ‘’enterprise’’ used next to a tablet, we know we should expect a robust and expensive slate running Windows. However, the folks at Fujitsu just announced the release of a tablet that, while pretty robust and sturdy, doesn’t run Windows and isn’t that expensive either. The Stylistic M350/CA2 is set to hit Japan later this month for around ¥34,800(455 US dollars) and might come to International markets, including the United States, if it will prove successful in ‘’the land of rising sun’’. However, if you ask me, this 7-incher does not look great on paper, at least in terms of tech specs and hardware. Set to be powered by a pretty decent 1 GHz Freescale i.MX processor, the Stylistic M350/CA2 only features 512 MB of DDR3 RAM, as well as 8 GB of internal storage space. The 7-inch screen sported comes with a 1024 x 600 pixels resolution, which is pretty much all you could expect from a tablet this small. Other features include a mini HDMI port, a microSD card slot for memory expansion, Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi b/g/n connectivity, which are all pretty basic things for Android tablets these days, while the OS of choice is Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sure, I wasn’t expecting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or a quad-core processor under the hood, but then again if you are going to call a tablet ‘’business-oriented’’, you could at least come with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of on-board memory. As far as the design goes, the Stylistic slate looks pretty elegant and is set to weigh only 420 grams (14.8 ounces), while in terms of battery life, the folks at Fujitsu are promising an estimated autonomy of around six hours based on medium use. As I already mentioned, the 7-incher should go for sale in the next couple of weeks in Japan, but if you ask me, the slate needs a serious price cut before being released in other markets as well.
Rhapsody streams your favorite music to your Android phone, Google TV, and even your Sonos player. Today, the company added Android tablets to the list thanks to a new tablet view designed specifically with 7 to 10-inch screens in mind. “We didn’t just resize Rhapsody – we re-imagined the entire experience for the tablet,” said Rhapsody CPO Brendan Benzing. The new Rhapsody tablet mode is a prime example of the cool things developers can do with a tablet. As expected, users can stream songs and build playlists or queues, but the larger screen allows them to do it without constantly pressing the back button. It’s also much easier to browse through a library because Rhapsody greets users with a screen showcasing featured content in three sections: New Releases; Popular artists, albums, and songs; and Suggestions for artists to listen to based on the music users have already added to their library. Rhapsody also has an action bar for the Browse, Features, My Music, Radio (stations built around an artist or genre), search, and control sections. A right panel shows the album cover art, playlist, and controls to play or skip back/forward. A homescreen widget is also included, but it could stand to larger than the 4

The Now Network today officially announced the ZTE Optik, a low-cost Android Honeycomb tablet with decent specs and an even better price. The ZTE Optik costs only $99 when purchased with a two-year agreement for one of Sprint’s Tablet Connection plans. But users can also opt to purchase the tablet at full price for $349.99 and not be tied down to a contract. For the price, you’ll get a tablet with a respectable resume.
The Android Platform Version chart has just been updated with the December figures and, while there aren’t any important surprises, there are a couple of interesting changes. Gingerbread remains the number one Android platform and has increased its lead from second place considerably. The 2.3 version powers no less than 58.6 percent of all Android-operated devices right now, while the runner up, 2.2 Froyo, only runs on 27.8 percent of Google powered gadgets. Those two were in the lead a month ago as well, but the difference between them has increased from just over 25 percent to a whopping 30.8 percent. The second runner-up is Android 2.1 Eclair, with a 7.6% market share, down 0.9 percent from last month. Honeycomb is in fourth place, as it was 30 days ago, down 0.1 percent to a 3.4% market share. Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest (and greatest, if I may say so) Android version is unsurprisingly only fifth in this share ranking. Unsurprisingly, because after all there are only a couple of available smartphones running 4.0 ICS and one slate. On the other hand, the next Google developers report (or maybe the one after that) should see an important change in rankings, as more and more smartphones and slates running Ice Cream Sandwich are due to be officially launched this late winter and in early spring. For the time being, we should mention that Ice Cream Sandwich has gone up from 0.6% a month ago to a whole percent right now, managing to tie the 1.6 Donut and surpass the 1.5 Cupcake. These two have still got teeny-weeny market shares, even though I personally don’t know anyone with a gadget running either of the two Android versions, but soon enough both Donut and Cupcake are set to become extinct. Check out the full chart below or hit the source link for more details.

Samsung disappointed some and pleased others when it said that the successor to its Galaxy S II device would not be unveiled at Mobile World Congress later this month. But what’s this? A mystery device showing a Samsung phone that looks to have a customized version of Android 4.0. Could this be the Galaxy S III? Or maybe the Galaxy S 2 Plus? Probably neither. Before you get too excited, this is just a Photoshop job – and a poor one at that – supposedly of a press photo leaked. It was posted a short while ago by Eldar Murtazin, a mobile phone blogger and insider who is sometimes very right and other times very wrong. It was attached to a tweet that simply said “Barcelona. Samsung. Press photo leaked” and a round of coy smiles when asked if this is the GS III or GS II Plus. I doubt this is a press photo at all because of the poor quality of the graphic. Looking at the bottom and left sides of the image, you can see what’s clearly a hack job of trying to resize, merge, and align different images pieced together in Photoshop. There’s also a terrible job of blending and the widgets don’t look right, which leads me to believe that this isn’t a “press photo.” Samsung would never have something this crappy sent to the press. It’s more than likely just an image someone crafted regarding how they think the next Samsung phone will look. It would be nice if elements of this concept really do appear in a Samsung device. The nice rectangular shape, large screen, Android 4.0, and slim build are all excellent qualities. We’ll know soon enough. Maybe. [ Twitter ]

At CES 2012, Verizon Wireless announced several smartphones including the LG Spectrum, DROID RAZR MAXX, DROID RAZR in purple, and the Motorola DROID 4 . The first three smartphones already launched in January, so the only 4G LTE smartphone to launch at this point is the DROID 4. The Motorola DROID 4 is essentially a RAZR packed with a revamped Slider QWERTY keyboard, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and Android 2.3 onboard. Given the fact that it is a new device, it should be upgraded to Android 4.0 in the near future. In terms of when it is going to be released, Droid-Life is citing some of their own sources that it will be released on February 9th for $199. Verizon is moving towards the trend of pricing their high-end 4G LTE devices with only 16GB of on board storage at $199, such as the Motorola DROID RAZR. However, the high-end devices with larger storage capacities will continue to be priced at $299. If Verizon does indeed launch the DROID 4 on February 9th, I imagine we will have an official announcement confirming this information within the next several days. [ Droid-Life ]

The annual performance review, which can determine if an employee gets a raise or merely gets to keep his or her job, isn’t the most optimal way to monitor performance. Why wait an entire year for bad habits or inefficient tactics to take hold when you could deliver critical feedback within days, hours, or even moments? Surely an employee will work better performance is reviewed sooner rather than later. Right? That’s where Rypple , a performance management service recently acquired by Salesforce, comes in. Rypple enables supervisors and employees to create clearly defined goals and discuss or rate the efforts that go into achieving said goals. And since so much of business is conducted on mobile phones today, Rypple has branched delivered a new Android app to manage teams and performance. “A huge amount of our traffic was already coming from [mobile phone browsers], so we realized we needed an app,” said Rypple VP of Product Management Maksim Ovsyannikov. “We kind of reached out to managers and end users to figure what was triggering their request to use the application from their mobile device. The answer was really simple: if you want recognition to be real-time, the only real way to do that is through mobile. Whether you’re on the run, in a meeting, or not at your desk at the time, which most of us aren’t always, it became necessary to support Android devices.” And so Rypple is now here to make feedback more frequent, consistent, and documented. The app creates a work center that a team or company joins and then focuses on collaboration and productivity in key areas. Social Goals are the objectives that employees work towards that managers can monitor in real-time. A supervisor can see when a specific goal is being worked on and when benchmarks are reached. Meaningful Recognition is when a manager acknowledges a goal has been achieved. There are badges created that seem a little over the top, but Rypple keeps track of these achievements over an extended period of time. Ovsyannikov tells us that this can come in handy when you’re looking for someone within the company who has certain skills, which may be validated by the recognition portfolio. Real-time feedback creates a dedicated space when employees can ask coworkers or supervisors questions, get tips on how to accomplish something, or be nudged away from potential mistakes. Continuous coaching has notes from meetings and goal tracking to monitor progress. Multi-channel access to Rypple from any kind of device, including the newsfeed that displays your progress and that of your co-workers. There’s also a tab to focus simply on your content or the goals to which you are connected. Rypple sees Android as a key part of plans to “transform the social feed into a productivity feed,” according to Ovsyannikov. That’s why the app incorporates features like photo sharing content and integrating with the calendar. In the future, the service could become even more powerful with integration to other services from Salesforce. When asked how the acquisition could expand Rypple’s capabilities on Android, Ovsyannikov had this to say: “Not yet, but it’s something we’re planning and building. There will be multiple integration points – some of the natural ones are Chatter and the service cloud and sales cloud of the CRM product. We have an integration of it in beta right now with an integration of Rypple recognition…it’s being used by a few customers already.” As for tablets, Rypple also has that in its plans. The current app was built for Android 2.1 and higher devices in mind because the company wants to focus on delivering a quality product for the high volume of users who already access Rypple on their mobile devices. A strategy for supporting tablet, be it through an HTML5 app wrapped in a native container or a tablet-specific app built from the ground-up, has yet to be determined. Rypple is available for free in the Android Market. It requires accounts that range from free with basic capabilities, Premium for $5, and Phenomenal for $9 per month. More information on the features and structure of these accounts are available at Rypple.com .

U.S. Cellular has just announced the first two devices to run on its 4G LTE network launching in select markets next month – the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE and the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator. Oh, before we get to that, maybe now is a good time to mention that U.S. Cellular is launching a 4G LTE network to run those devices. While larger carriers like AT&T and Verizon have begun their LTE competition, regional carriers like US Cellular are working to do the same in the areas that they service. Beginning next month, U.S. Cellular will launch an LTE network that should cover 25 percent of its current customers. Partnering with King Street Wireless, U.S. Cellular will launch LTE in some of its biggest markets, including: Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Des Moines, Iowa Bangor and Portland, Maine Greenville, North Carolina Madinson, Milwaukee, and Racine, Wisconsin LTE coverage will also be available in select cities not specifically named in Oklahoma, Texas, and the previously mentioned states. The network will roll-out eventually to other markets that U.S Cellular offers service, but interested customers can view a coverage map to see if their home falls within the launch area. As for the phones offered, Samsung will supply both a tablet and a phone capable of running on the 4G network. Readers should be very familiar with the GTab 10.1 by now, which offers an Android 3.2 software package with a 10.1-inch WXGA TFT touchscreen and LTE chip built-in. The GTab will be the first LTE device when it goes on sale next month. Readers might also recognize the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator as a rebranded Droid Charge . The Aviator runs Android 2.3.6, has a 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED+ screen, 8 MP rear camera, and a front-facing camera for video-chat. The GS Aviator goes on sale in April, almost a year after the original Droid Charge was sold on Verizon. Get more info at US Cellular

Motorola Xyboard – Strange name, solid tablet, serious contender? [Tablet Review]

I’m going to skip talking about the Xyboard name for as long as I can. Ok. The name is ridiculous; I’m moving on. As Verizon’s newest tablet, the Xyboard has a lot of weight on its shoulders from the Xoom and Galaxy 10.1 debuts. Motorola has certainly impressed me recently, but can their smartphone success translate into tablet success? Is this a worthy successor to a less-than-one-year old tablet? If you’re looking for a 4G LTE tablet, absolutely, and here’s why. Hardware The look and feel of the Xyboard is one of Motorola’s highest efforts over the past few months. With shaved corners and a very thin exterior, the Xyboard feels almost like an 8″ tablet. Unlike the Xoom, the frame is solidly constructed throughout and it can rival the Galaxy 10.1 for thinness, though it is heavier than the Galaxy 10.1. Thanks to Motorola’s consistent foresight in adding a mini-HDMI output, you can play the Xyboard on your big screen which you can’t with the Galaxy 10.1. The rest of the Xyboard’s exterior is minimalistic with a black/silver aluminum frame and a power and volume rocker on the back instead of the sides of the device. I do like what Motorola does with these buttons, and I definitely think this is a more natural positioning for your hand. However, the buttons are too flush with the back and don’t offer a satisfying click whenever they’re pressed so you may miss them or not press them if you’re not paying close attention. Screen/Camera The high-res screen is beautiful, as it should be, but I didn’t think it was anything overly spectacular. It could get very bright, but the automatic brightness wasn’t the most intelligent sensor so I was stuck with a blinding light while reading at night. Unlike the RAZR but similar to every other tablet I’ve tried, the screen can get very smudgy. I was wiping it off with a cleaner every other day just to make it look respectable. The colors and overall screen seem better than my Transformer too. With the camera, I have been fairly impressed with Motorola’s latest offerings. You don’t expect to have the greatest camera on a tablet, but on the Xyboard it is more than serviceable. The photos can speak for themselves:

While most smartphone manufacturers are battling to make their devices thinner and lighter by incorporating all kinds of different metals onto the design, a British university student has found the easiest and most eco-friendly solution to building a light phone. The ADzero is set to be the world’s first ever smartphone built out of bamboo and, even though it looks like a concept with zero chances of becoming reality, it is actually nearing its official release. Looking original and quite elegant if I may say so, the ADzero will supposedly run Android, but other than that all hardware and software details are kept under wraps. Set to be ‘’approximately half the weight of an iPhone, while boasting a larger screen’’, the ADzero might well rock the entire technology market, but could also prove to be an enormous flop. The smartphone’s design is elegant in my view, as I already mentioned, and I appreciate the using of a single piece of organic bamboo, but I wonder if this kind of gadget could be made high-tech enough to draw attention from pretentious technology geeks. I mean, there’s a rear-facing camera we can see from the first official photos, but what about the processor, the screen and the software? Will those be satisfying enough? Also, think about what could the mass production of such a gadget mean for the Asian culture and also for the ecosystem! Wouldn’t there be a problem in cutting up bamboo plants for something other than building materials and food? Well, those are all legitimate questions and we’ll probably find out the answers soon enough, but for the time being let’s just enjoy the first pics of this cool and original new smartphone set to be released this year, according to official statements, in China and the UK. And who knows, maybe this’ll come to the US also soon enough… Via Justadzero.com

Samsung earlier this morning confirmed to TechRadar.com that the Galaxy S III will not be launching at Mobile World Congress later this month. Many expected Samsung to unveil its next hero device at MWC following the successful unveiling of the Galaxy S II at the 2011 MWC; however, there was a problem with the GS II announcement last year – it debuted more than half a year before Samsung was ever able to deliver it in the U.S. The Galaxy S II was announced in mid February 2011 but didn’t arrive in the U.S. until late September/early October of the same year. That seven-month stretch was far too long to have users knowing that a product exists, seeing that buyers in Asia and Europe were able to purchase it months earlier, and then delivering a different product when it finally arrived. It was frustrating for consumers to be kept away from the phone, especially when Samsung’s rivals were able to actually deliver their flagship phones much sooner. Samsung is taking a different approach this time around, and I’m all for it. There’s definitely a chance that smartphone buyers will opt for HTC, LG, Motorola, or Sony if those companies have tipped their hands and shown what will be available soon. But as we saw with the Droid Bionic fiasco, putting all your cards on the table before you’re truly ready to play isn’t always the best move. If Samsung is still working on perfecting the GS III or still keeping certain details hidden until it can be closer to delivering a product into consumers’ hands and not just hands-on videos from press, that might be a wiser strategy. When will Samsung unveil its next flagship phone? No telling exactly, but it will be no later than June according to an unnamed Samsung rep’s comments to Tech Radar. “Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012. The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.”
